![]() This is one of the rare Soviet lenses whose optical quality gets very close to the standard set by its forebears. And it’s not just sharp for a Soviet lens, it’s sharp compared to any and all. The lens wide-open does exhibit a slight loss of contrast and somewhat pronounced vignetting, but when closed-down things sharpen up considerably. Fortunately, the narrower-depth-of-field naturally provided by the 58mm focal length makes subject isolation available at a wider range of apertures, offering some control over how much swirl exists in a given image.Īcross the f/16 to f/2 aperture range the Helios 44M remains remarkably consistent. This swirl has become a calling card for the lens and is one of the reasons the Helios has a cult following, but I personally find the effect a little jarring and its usage often gratuitous. Wide-open at f/2, the Helios 44M exhibits a signature bokeh swirl, something commonly associated with older lenses. The lens also has a reputation for the unique way it renders bokeh. It isolates subjects in a clearer way than 50mm does owing to the naturally narrower depth-of-field of 58mm, and presents a slightly tighter, more focused image. I tend towards 50mm, and I find that 58mm works like a charm. Avid 50mm shooters may be a little put off by how long this lens is, and die-hard 35mm and 40mm street shooters might find this lens much too narrow for their purposes. The Helios’ 58mm focal length is at the longest end of the definition of the 35mm “standard,” which ranges anywhere from 35mm to 60mm. The first thing that jumps out about this lens’ imaging characteristics isn’t actually the image quality itself it’s the slightly unusual focal length. The formula reappeared post-war in the East German-controlled Carl Zeiss Jena plant as the Carl Zeiss Jena 58mm f/2, and was eventually rebranded by the Soviet Union as the Helios 44M we know today. The Biotar was initially manufactured for cinema use, and then adapted for the Exakta mount in 1936. The lens formula itself dates back to the 1920’s and referred to a variation on the six elements in four Double-Gauss formula made famous by the Zeiss Planar. Its stellar reputation springs directly from its predecessor, the Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2. After having been sufficiently disappointed by the performance of a couple of other Soviet “sleeper” lenses I really wasn’t expecting much from the Helios 44M. This is an assertion that has time and again proved to be wildly exaggerated, if not flat out wrong. The aperture ring feels entirely too loose, my copy has a stiff focus action which on occasion aggravates my carpal tunnel syndrome, and the depth-of-field preview wheel sometimes decides to stop down of its own accord.īut most people will tell that the saving grace of many less-than-stellarly-built Soviet lenses is their overall image quality in relation to their cost. Yes, it packs in all the accoutrements of pricier manual focus SLR lenses, like a focusing scale, half-stop clicks between f-stop markers, and a depth-of-field preview wheel, but the execution here is pretty dismal. ![]() It’s incredibly solid in both feel and construction, but has all the sophistication of an Eliza Doolittle. ![]() The Helios’ build quality ticks all the Soviet lens boxes, for better and worse. ![]() Why? It followed the same formula every other lackluster Soviet lens followed it was a yet another Zeiss knockoff (aping the Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2), it came attached to a half-broken camera, and it was produced by a factory known for its loose manufacturing tolerances, KMZ (Krasnogorsky Zavod), famous for producing the Industar and Jupiter lenses found on the Leica copies known as FED and Zorki, and since those two lenses ended up being mostly unremarkable, I wasn’t scrambling to get my hands on a Helios.Īnd right I was, at least at first. I quickly unscrewed the Helios from the Zenit and stuck it onto my resident M42 shooter, the elegant Pentax SV. It came attached to a Zenit TTL which I wanted to test, but whose busted light meter disqualified it for review ( that job fell to Jeb). Like many Soviet lenses, the Helios 44M waltzed (or hopaked?) into my life unannounced. ![]() But there’s one lens in my collection that quietly and consistently reminds me that I don’t know it all, and that lens is the Helios 44M 58mm f/2. I’ve come to the conclusion that despite their internet reputations for being amazing dark horses, most of these lenses are just sub-par copies of German ones. Our frequent coverage of lenses and cameras from the former Soviet Union might make us seem like ardent fans of the subgenre, but I can assure you it’s not the case (true at least for the members of the CP writing staff who aren’t named Jeb). ![]() ![]() I was also impressed with the black pepper they brought out for my fries: the server confirmed that it was, in fact, fresh ground upon request and then served in a small dish with a spoon. It's made in-house, and it has garlic aioli in it, giving it a GREAT FLAVOR. Although a bit pricey at $22 (I'd say $15-17.50 would be more reasonable, but I do understand that FRESH Icelandic cod "ain't cheap.") As unusual as it may sound, I have to rave about, of all things, the tartar sauce. I always ask for extra-crispy but not burnt, plain fries (no salt, so seasoning), and these came out exactly as requested. The side items are excellent chips (thick-cut fries that are crispy and not greasy at all) and mashed peas with mint leaves (very authentic, quite tasty, and I wish the serving was larger!). I'd estimate the fillet at close to 12 inches in length and at least an inch thick, with not a bone in sight. It is not greasy, and the breading works perfectly with the sweet cod flavor. ![]() This establishment uses fresh Icelandic cod, and the single fillet is LARGE, properly battered, and then perfectly fried. They were so good that we ordered a second batch!! My buddy who was with me generally was not into Brussel sprouts, but he ordered the second round!! Main course, what else but fish and chips. For an appetizer, I chose the "Grilled Brussels," which the server confirmed were Brussel sprouts that were steamed a bit, then grilled on an open flame before being flavored with a nice Korean BBQ sauce ($6). It was served nicely chilled and complemented the meal perfectly. I took advantage of that option to test three possibilities, picking the raspberry sour in a 16-ounce glass ($6.50). The beer and wine menu is fairly extensive, and if it's on tap, they'll bring you a sample to help you decide. We were properly socially distant from the nearest guests, so it was perfect. The two ladies working the greeting desk were friendly, and worked at getting us a table - we forgot that this was the Saturday night of Valentine's Day Weekend - and it didn't take long for us to get seated at a "tall table" near the bar. So when my friend Jeremy suggested it for dinner (we hadn't gotten together since December), I gave it the thumbs up! Other than being a bit on the expensive side, it was a terrific choice. I've wanted to check out THE ANVIL for quite a while, but just hadn't had the opportunity until earlier this evening. A dessert was offered, but we declined as we were full from the generous sized entrees. All in all, a good value for what was paid. They were in line for the quality that we received. There have been some comments about the price, but we felt that the quality of the food with locally sourced, fresh ingredients warranted the prices. Two of us chose the shrimp and grits and two chose the fish sandwich. ![]() The okra was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. ![]() The wings were very tasty and had a "volcano" hot sauce served with them. We started with the Thai chicken wings and the fried okra. The menus were varied and each of us could find multiple items that interested us. There was a beverage menu as well as a daily lunch menu. We were greeted immediately and offered water. Our party of four chose the outside option as it was a nice day. There is ample parking and seating is available both inside and outside. We had lunch at the Anvil and were pleased with our visit there. ![]() ![]() ![]() And so, yeah, it was sort of just a natural progression, I think it's a nice introduction to all of the other things that I can do. And so we had picked out 'Déjà Vu' to be the second single after 'Drivers License,' we've had that picked out for months. On why she decided it should be a follow-up: "It was really important to me and to my team that we didn't just put out another ballad after 'Drivers License.' You know what I mean? We wanted to show that I am a very versatile songwriter, and I love all different types of music, and I create all different types of music. And I really love painting pictures with songs." ![]() And so we kind of wrote it together and kind of created this whole world. And so I was like, 'Oh, I have this line written,' and he really liked it. I think we're trying to write like a sad song or something and it just wasn't coming, and he's like, 'What else do you have?' And I was like, 'Well, I have this line,' I just have song lyrics written on my notes app for days. We were actually trying to write something else. It says, 'When she's with you, do you get déjà vu?' And so I was in the studio with Dan who's my producer and main collaborator, just my favorite guy ever. So I had this line in my phone written for like a while. And so I thought it would be a cool play on words to use déjà Vu as a metaphor for this very universal thing that happens when you break up with someone and they get with somebody else, and see them living the life that you lived…yeah, it's just a super universal thing that I think happens to everyone that we just don't really talk about a ton. Like I really love that concept, I get déjà vu all the time. ![]() But I'm sort of obsessed with the concept of déjà vu. ![]() On the meaning of "Deja Vu": "I actually wrote it about a month after writing 'Driver's License.' So I wrote out a really long time ago, I mean, relatively. And so that was always nice to have that picked out."Ĭlick inside to see what else she said. I think we decided really last year, maybe like September or something. The good 4 u hitmaker took to her Instagram Stories to share a clip of her and producer Dan Nigro. Olivia Rodrigo has shared some alternative lyrics to her controversial song Vampire, to not contain profanity. But I've had "Déjà Vu" picked out for months. Olivia Rodrigo has been hard at work on so many new songs. But it is sort of difficult having that be my first song ever, because the success is so immense, it sort of feels like a little bit of pressure to follow it up and hopefully sustain that success. And I think I really did that with that one. deja vu is the second single from Olivia Rodrigo’s debut studio album, SOUR, and her first release since the breakout success of her debut single, drivers license. And I think I really had a lot of people around me that kind of were driving that message home. And it's everyone else's song to interpret, it's not your song anymore. On success after "Drivers License": "The success of 'Driver's License' has been a huge lesson in how you just need to, when you put a song out, you just need to let it go. On the same day, she joined Zane Lowe on Apple Music to discuss her new single, as well as what she learned from the overwhelming success of "Drivers License." Check out the videos for both tracks below.Following the record-breaking success of her hit song "Drivers License," the 18-year-old singer-songwriter just premiered the follow up track, "Deja Vu," on Thursday (April 1). Swift and Rodrigo have publicly professed mutual fandom, so this doesn’t seem to be a case of Rodrigo mollifying a pissed-off Swift, but who knows. Rodrigo gave songwriting credit on that one to Swift and Antonoff right away. In interviews, Rodrigo had already acknowledged Swift’s massive influence, and she’d acknowledged that “Deja Vu” was specifically inspired by “Cruel Summer.” “Deja Vu” isn’t the only song from Rodrigo’s debut album Sour to feature an interpolation of one of Swift’s songs her ballad “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” also uses pieces of “New Year’s Day,” the last song on Swift’s 2017 album Reputation. All three have been added to the “Deja Vu” metadata on streaming services like Spotify. Now, Rodrigo has made that connection official.Īs Rolling Stone points out, Taylor Swift has been given a co-writing credit on “Deja Vu,” and Swift’s “Cruel Summer” collaborators, producer Jack Antonoff and fellow Antonoff collaborator St. Specifically, the shouting on the “Cruel Summer” bridge sounds like the shouting on the “Deja Vu” bridge. Back in April, Olivia Rodrigo released her sticky pop snarl “ Deja Vu,” the follow-up to her massive smash “Drivers License.” When the album dropped, a whole lot of people noticed that the bridge of “Deja Vu” sounded a bit like “Cruel Summer,” the song from Taylor Swift’s 2019 album Lover. ![]() ![]() Hotels near Brookstone College of Business.Hotels near University of North Carolina at Greensboro.Motels near Piedmont Triad Intl Airport (GSO).Motels near Smith-Reynolds Airport (INT).Hotels near Smith-Reynolds Airport (INT).Hotels near Piedmont Triad Intl Airport (GSO). ![]() ![]() Motels near International Civil Rights Center & Museum.Resorts near International Civil Rights Center & Museum.Hotels near Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden.Hotels near Greensboro Children's Museum.Hotels near The Bog Garden at Benjamin Park.Hotels near Greensboro Coliseum Complex.Hotels near Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.Hotels near International Civil Rights Center & Museum.Extended Stay America Hotels in Greensboro.Cannot be applied to any other discounted offer. The Safari Nation VIP Member T-Shirts is the way to save big on every visit to Safari Nation! ![]() The HDR-HC3 offers some limited control over both sharpness and saturation levels (called Color Levels). Due to the significantly reduced bit rate of DVD camcorders, however, the DVD505 produced fuzzier images. The Sony DVD505 has the same CMOS imager as the HC3, producing a similar color balance and saturation levels. There’s no question that the HC3 produces much better video performance and is a better value when it comes to video quality. Noise levels were also higher in the Panasonic, though the noise was of a fine grain variety rather than the blocky noise in the Sony HC3. The Panasonic PV-GS500 had even more in-camera sharpening problems. Saturation levels are higher in the Optura 600, however, and the color balance is better in the Sony. Both cameras produce similar color performance, appear to have commensurate levels of apparent sharpness, and show the same stair-stepping in a close view. The Canon Optura 600, which has a larger 1/2.8" CCD (though much lower effective video resolution), produced a less detailed image, as the picture is only standard definition NTSC 640 x 480. We also compared the HC3 to the top SD models of Canon and Panasonic, and to the top Sony DVD camcorder. Noise is also more prevalent in the HC3 than it was with the HC1, which managed to confine it to fine grain patterns in the HC3, noise and sharpening combine to produce slight blurring along high-contrast areas. While not excessive, the sharpening is definitely noticeable, as is the haloing that occurs along most borders. The result is stair-stepping along curved lines, something which we don't expect to see in HD video and which disappoints us. The HC3 also shows more in-camera sharpening than did the HC1. While the image is certainly saturated, it's not excessive, and it doesn't detract from the brilliance of the picture. ![]() As Sony is aiming for a different market for the HC3, they may be adjusting the image to match the expectations of those users. ![]() ![]() There is a good color balance, though the saturation has increased noticeably since the HC1, primarily in the magenta through the blue portions of the spectrum: greens are slightly more saturated, reds remain the same, and yellows are marginally less saturated than they were in the HC1.
